Tattie Jam (Ruaridh Pringle & Seylan Baxter)

Tattie Jam ingredients:
Spicy instrumentals, song content not less than 50%, recipe for modern tastes using original and traditional Scottish ingredients. Traditional and folk with a twist!

Ruaridh's distinctive and versatile guitar picking and clear voice compliment Seylan's expressive vocals and fluid cello in exciting arrangements of humorous and pithy new songs, funky dance tunes, keening slow airs and haunting old ballads. Seylan's 5-string electric bass gives their music a wonderful rich sound yet has the range to play surprising jigs and reels. Their music expresses the heart and soul of traditional and folk music in exciting and unusual ways.

These wildly different personalities and musical tastes combine to give a very full sound for a duo. Both Ruaridh and Seylan sing and play lead instruments at the same time effectively doubling the sound to fill the room as if it were a 4 piece band. Twice the bang for your buck!

Tattie Jam expresses the heart and soul of traditional and folk songs and tunes in exciting and unusual ways. A recipe of traditional themes (and sometimes new ones, seen through folk eyes) and not just add a spicy garnish, but reinvent them from the ground upwards - like a nouvelle cuisine reinterpretation of an old, classic dish.

A particularly big sound for a duo: two musicians that sound like a dynamic four piece band, with full vocal harmonies plus guitar and cello both played in styles which combine melodic, chordal and percussion elements.

Seylan is a unique Celtic musician playing complex cello arrangements on a 5-string electric cello whilst singing lead vocals. A low F string gives a deep bass sound yet enables her to play fast tunes as though it were a fiddle, probably the only cellist in Scotland to do so. This isn't the background 'accompaniment' style cello most listeners might expect, but something much more dynamic and exciting.

Half their material is written by Ruaridh, from driving reels and haunting airs, to songs: sad love songs and quirkily humourous observations through to thoughtful protest songs, all deeply influenced by the Scottish tradition but varying in style from traditional to bluegrass and even funk. Ruaridh has a strong, warm and clear voice likened to Dougie MacLean and Archie Fisher. Plus, he adds didgeridoo, mandolin, whistles and banjo for sheer diversity.

There can be few traditional bands with such an engagingly diverse mix of material and expression. Ruaridh and Seylan have very different musical tastes, and the result when these collide and merge is electric.
